LEO satellites services can deliver impressive performance in many conditions, and fast deployment.
But in real-world deployments like municipal networks, public safety, transportation, ports, and industrial sites, those advantages come with trade-offs that network architects can’t ignore:
- Uplink-heavy apps (CCTV, sensors, control) can be constrained depending on plan and loading
- Latency and jitter can fluctuate under load
- Shared capacity means per-site guarantees aren’t always deterministic
- Weather, interference, and regulation can affect availability and usability
- SLAs and support vary by provider, geography, and service tier
Most operational networks aren’t download-first focused.
They’re video, sensor, and control-driven, where consistency matters as much as throughput.
That’s where terrestrial networks (Fiber or fixed wireless) often provide a better architectural fit.
Satellite absolutely has a role, especially for rapid deployment, temporary sites, and backup connectivity.
It’s just not optimized to be the primary network for every mission-critical requirement.
