What is a wireless Internet service provider (WISP)?
A wireless Internet service provider (WISP) is an Internet service provider (ISP) that allows subscribers to connect to the internet through hot spots (access points) using a wireless connection such as Wi-Fi for customers in motion and fixed radio access to homes and offices. WISP offers broadband service that allows subscribers’ computers and mobile devices to access the Internet from anywhere within the zone of coverage provided by the server antenna. WISPs provide “last mile” coverage by completing the service area where there is no access by copper or fiber landlines. WISP networks are implemented world-wide mostly in rural areas.
A WISP transmits and receives radio signals using antennas mounted on towers or buildings, just as cellular service providers do, and like a satellite service provider, it can deliver service to fixed locations, and doesn’t cap the amount of data.
What is the difference between ISP & WISP?
An ISP is an internet service provider (in general). WISPs provide wireless internet service via transmitters located on communication towers.
